| Cutting Flowers
Harvesting your flowers
Cut when? Flowers cut from your garden during the cooler morning hours will have a longer vase life.
HOW to cut
Knives and cutting shears should be kept sharp to ensure that stems are cut evenly and not crushed, as it is difficult for a crushed flower to draw water up its stem, which will cause an early death.
Keeping them clean
Knives, cutting shears and buckets should be disinfected before each use with a mild bleach solution (one part bleach to 10 parts water). This solution is highly corrosive; be sure to oil cutting tools after using and not to spill it on clothes or furnishings.
Feed your Flowers
Place your freshly harvested flowers in lukewarm water in your cleansed bucket, which should contain a floral preservative often referred to as "Flower food". Don't be tempted to use sugar as this is an old wives tale and will only serve to clog your stems and stop water from travelling up! Floral preservatives enhance the flowers' vase life. If floral preservatives are used, put the flowers in plastic containers, as some floral preservatives will react with a metal container. Three to 4 inches of water and preservative mixed in a bucket is a good way to store the flowers and condition them ready for arranging.. Floral preservative can be bought from most garden centres and florists.
Keep cool!! Until you arrange your flowers, keep them as cool as possible.
